Review Peugeot Traveller

When you base an MPV on a van, especially a medium van, it will inevitably look and feel like … well, a van, writes Brian Byrne.

It’s partly a size thing, partly the shape, which if it is any useful of a van at all, it has to have the shape that will accommodate packages and pallets in the most efficient way.

Of course, when it comes to the Peugeot Expert van on which the Peugeot Traveller people carrier is based, well the platform is the same one that underpins other MPVs in the PSA Group …. such as the Citroen C4 Picasso, and just recently the new 3008 crossover.< br />
So, the Traveller is an MPV based on a van based on an MPV … which is why all variants are so comfortable.

And then there’s the Traveller based on the compact length of the van, which eliminates the size problem, and only at the expense of some luggage space when the third row of seats is in use.

I think the Traveller looks very smart, especially in this length. The style elements of the front, the only space where you can have style I suppose, are strong and modern, set off by chrome-style details and with very funky looking lights. It’s a bull-nose look, with a high bonnet, but the aesthetics work for me.

I think the overall shape looks good too, and I like the driving height, which also facilitates passengers being able to see over some hedges and traffic. Great if you have kids who need constant attention stimulus.

The sliding side doors provide good access to the middle and rearmost seats, and the lift-up rear d oor is handy for sitting under shelter in the parking field of any weekend leisure gig where spectating or picnicking is part of the action.

Compact it might be, but the vehicle is 4.6m long, and though it has a 2.9m wheelbase rather than the 3.4m in the two longer variants, there’s still plenty of room inside. The seating configuration can be 2/5/8 and further cargo-carrying options can be achieved by removing seats entirely. With the three rows in use, the compact only offers about the same boot capacity as a Kia Picanto, but flip that rear row forward and you get up to 1,300L of capacity, more if you take the seats out altogether.

My review car had the Active entry specification, cloth seats, and very comfortable too. Again, because of the Expert base, there’s lots of headroom, and I expect that even with a pretty full complement of passengers there’d be no sense of claustrophobia.

The specification levels even at the Active stage are high, and it’s almost easier to say what’s not available there, such as no body coloured door handles. Oddly, there are no curtain airbags on Active.

All versions get a 7” touchscreen, DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity. All get cruise control, and electric front windows. All get the dinky child surveillance mirror, which sounds a little creepy but does work well.

The dashboard is a tidy affair, well finished in good quality materials, and with a wide lidded storage space in the middle top to keep maps and other stuff from littering down to the scuttle. The steering wheel angle is comfortable, the gear stick neatly set into an outcrop from the fascia, and generally controls are well-placed.

The review car had the 115hp 1.6 diesel which has its own very good reputation in many PSA and other brands. It was very quiet in this application, and lugged us along with a minimum of fuss.

The overall driving experience of the Traveller is absolutely superb in comfort terms, and the car handles nicely too. In its van clothes I’m already on record that the Expert and its sibling vehicles are the nicest in the business to drive, and this Traveller would equal any luxury car in this respect.

It can be upgraded at purchase, by choosing 2.0 diesels in 150hp/180hp guises, that last with an automatic transmission. You can also step up the spec to Allure and Business VIP levels if you are so inclined to spend … both of those have full leather, the top one drops a middle seat to offer lounge or boardroom comfort for five behind the driver.

So where would I see the Traveller fitting in? Well, in compact and standard sizes, it could be a family car to see the children and their home taxi needs through their teens. I’d reckon on keeping it for five or six years to get the most out of it.

At the top end it could be an executive shuttle between head offices and airports, for instance, or to meetings with peers across town. It is good-looking enough for that in Business VIP.

The compact version has only arrived, and it is priced at €36,695 plus delivery, a fair bit cheaper than the €38,000 starting price of the standard length Active. Right, not your typical family wagon price, but you’re getting significantly more space than in many a compact SUV, and arguably more real usability.

Used Car Review Subaru Impreza WRX WRX STi 2008 2014

With the new generation in the spotlight, Myk Belmonte evaluates the old model and sees if it is a bargain buy.

2008-2014 Subaru Impreza WRX/WRX STi

History
To steer clear of the expected words which will pop up on this paragraph, let me just tell this trait done in the car universe. Just like beer, car companies do offer regular, mild, and super versions of their vehicles. Regular are the plain jane performance models, mild are for those who wouldnt want to be intimidated, and super are reserved for the experienced.

Same story with the regular version, so let us just tell you the related items here. WRX models first debuted to the world, alongside with their regular counterparts, in April 2007 while the tamer STi model was made available in October 2007. Unlike the regulars 2011 availability, those who wanted the high performance model had to wait until 2013 but only available in a sedan body.

As mentioned in the Subaru Impreza review last year, the trunkless version came to the scene through the launching of both variants for the said body style. On the other hand, the sedan configuration was made available in April 2009 but only in WRX flavor. A late 2010 update had the WRX STi being refreshed and necessitated the discontinuation of the WRX variant. Last month, a new generation model of this rally bred vehicle is made available to Filipino consumers which makes this one a great bargain for less cash.

Value and Costs
Please to tell you this news that you can get this rally star for a snip of P900,000 for older models while recent ones costs you P1,400,000. As a general rule, going with a July 2011 and later model is the key to utilize the remainder of the warranty. Anything that appears to be modified extensively is a huge no-no, especially that it spoils the fun in a huge way including your money.

Basically, you should not expect low maintena nce costs similar to your top end Corolla or Civic or heck, a regular Impreza. But be thankful that it is lower than a Mustang or that supercar you are drooling about. Apart from the regular wear and tear that one would expect, check if the vehicle is modified.

Exterior and Interior
Everything that is applicable to the regular version is applied here, but the differences include the following (and mostly apply to the WRX STi except when noted): a different rim design, the presence of a hood scoop (for both models), larger fenders, a rear spoiler, and more mufflers. The WRX may look plain but it is one sleeper car.

Space is excellent, something that competitors are ashamed of while interior quality is definitely tops. Everything else were lifted from its non-performance counterparts save for the glowing pink steering wheel on the WRX STi.

Engine
There are two separate engines for both variants which keeps their pe rsonalities distinct from one another. If you are purchasing the WRX model, then be informed that it has the EJ255 2,457cc belching out 230hp at 5,200rpm and 320Nm at 2,800rpm. For the power and rev happy in you, then the standard option for WRX STi models is an EJ257 2,457cc displacing 296hp at 6,000rpm and 407Nm at 4,000rpm for MT variants and 350Nm at 3,000-6,000rpm for AT models. Do remember that in a 2010 update, the MT is exclusive for the WRX STi sedan while the AT is reserved for the hatchback. When it comes to performance, both have different styles especially that the WRX is blistering fast but not to the point of scaring the first time driver while going with the WRX STi must be done wisely since the MT is a better pick against the AT which does not thrill the drive unless your route involves traffic jams.

Driving Impressions
Do take note that updated models carry a stiffer suspension which can be both an advantage and disadvantage for some p eople. When it comes to driving pleasure, it will give you smiles all day and the engine tears up the roof, just dont mind the horrible fuel economy which comes standard.

Verdict
This vehicle can perform two tasks in which you can take it to the daily grind and you can have fun during the weekends. Subarus task is, in a way, succeeded well especially that its main rival is harsh. What can be expensive before is now affordable for ordinary blokes like us.

The Good:
  • Practical
  • Fast
  • Now affordable
The Bad:
  • Not fuel friendly
  • Power grabbing automatic transmission
  • Maintenance costs will kill you
The Pick: WRX

Used Car Review Nissan Sentra Exalta 2000 2001

Filipinos deserve nothing but the best after a long tiring day. But, do remember that it must be on a budget. And Myk Belmonte scouts around the used car land for bargains that can be had for less. So, you can now tell your friends that your car has luxury items for less cash without joining Showtime or Eat Bulaga.

2000-2001 Nissan Sentra Exalta

History
If you mention the word "luxury", lavishness and tons of money come to mind. Not all people can afford a BMW, Benz, or a Bentley (drool more) - especially in the financial and maintenance sense. Other manufacturers such as Toyota, Ford, and Volkswagen (sister brands of Lexus, Lincoln, and Audi respectively) lend their mass market vehicles and put glamorous features (such as excessive chrome, leather all around, and tons of gadgets).

Yulon Motor of Taiwan purchased 75% ownership of Nissans newly-built assembly plant located in Santa Rosa, Laguna . Did you know that Yulon had a relationship with Nissan since 1967? Yes, they produce Nissan vehicles under license and also assembles Chrysler, Geely, GM, Mercedes Benz and Mitsubishi. Apart from vehicle assembly, the company engages in vehicle importation. They bring in Infiniti, Nissan, and Renault vehicles to Taiwan.

The Yulon acquisition had the Nissan Sentra Exalta introduced to the Philippine market in the year 2000. It was billed as the direct (and only competitor during that time) rival of the Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8. It utilized the GA16NE engine (the Sentra Super Saloon uses a different type from the GA engine family) and saw the usage of chrome and leather. This model paved way for the usage of the Exalta badge for the N13 Sentra from 2001-2003, it reverted back to simply Sentra in 2004. Variants include the simpler SLA and the fully loaded STA.

Value and Costs
The price of luxury can be had for less than a million bucks when bran d new. 10 years later or so, affordable luxury can be attained for P210,000-P260,000. Nissans (in general) do have poor resale values, so these are bargains for used car buyers. Youll also encounter N13 Sentras of later age in that price range, so have a keen eye if its an original Sentra Exalta B14 youd seek.

Electronic gadgets are a dream for ones car, but their breakdowns can cause headaches. If youre inspecting a unit, pay particular attention to these gadgets (especially in the STA variant) if they function well. The idle air control valve, mass airflow sensor, the alternator, and battery should be checked thoroughly since the gadgets put extra load for the MAF sensor and the air control valve. The rear suspension is soft due to the comfort biased nature and must be checked for weird noises that warrants a replacement. Leather is nice until they have scratches and stains. Spare some money for repairs and youll be rewarded with a worry free journey. On the flipsi de, mechanical parts (most of them) are similar to other Sentra B14s.

Exterior and Interior
Not much is to be said with the exterior, since it uses the body of the B14 Sentra where it was based on. Color coded handles are standard - as opposed to the blacked ones in the lowly trim lines. The STA does have the sunroof as standard equipment. You may dismiss this variant as luxurious or tacky looking.

If theres one thing to discuss about the Sentra Exalta B14, it would the interior. Occupants receive a roomy interior but the rear is tight for six footers. Both variants receive wood accents, rear backup sensors, and sapphire starlight gauges. The SLA does have a manual transmission, and basic power amenities; the STA is paired with an automatic transmission and a laundry list of features - which includes the availability of a sunroof, 12 disc CD changer, retractable window shades, leather seating, retractable mirrors, automatic climate control, hands fr ee system (for older Nokia phones), and a four disc braking system.

Engine
If Sentra Super Saloons use a GA16DNE engine mentioned on my Sentra B14 article, the Exalta utilizes a GA16DE 1,596cc for both SLA and STA variants. The carry 110hp at 6,000rpm and 140Nm @ 4,000rpm, almost similar to the other GA engine found on local Sentras. If the SS has the potential to speed up, the Exalta can be described as slower once you get behind the wheel. Why slow? This is because of the added heft caused by the electronic gadgets and the comfort bias rear suspension.

Driving Impressions
If youre the type who longs for the freeway or long drives, the Exalta is the perfect match. Your passengers would feel in comfort since the suspension is tuned for them, and the combo for the leather is nice. But, handling is not as agile as the EK Civic and due to the comfort priority, expect numb handling. Better avoid zigzag roads and tight curves if you want to f ully utilize this cars potential as an alternative to expensive luxo sedans.

Verdict
Different people have different definitions of the word luxury. The Sentra Exalta (in B14 platform) is one wonder during its time for offering luxury features at mass market prices. Just remember that luxury items (such as gadgets) are nice to have, but break them and it would mean catastrophe. If youre not a badge snob and adventurous at a same time, why not consider the Sentra Exalta B14?

The Good:
  • Luxury items for less cash
  • Plush ride
  • Posh looks
The Bad:
  • Poor handling
  • Definitely not sporty
  • Good luck if these decade old gadgets fail
The Pick: Since two variants are available, go for a well maintained unit

Elegance to the fore at Louise Kennedy event

Elegance and style were to the fore when an influential audience of Mercedes-Benz lady owners were guests at an exclusive presentation in Luttrellstown Castle recently at which Irish fashion designer, Louise Kennedy, presented garments from her 2017 Spring/Summer collection, writes Trish Whelan.

There to catch their eye as guests made their way towards the red carpet was a display of the very latest new model introductions from Mercedes-Benz - a range that includes the elegant E-Class Coupe and the top-of-the-range S-Class Cabriolet.

Pictured standing with Louise alongside the new S-Class Cabriolet are Mercedes-Benz chief executive Stephen Byrne; marketing executive Fiona Fennell, and sales manager Ciaran Allen.

Next CR V wont have diesel

Honda is to drop its diesel engine option in the next CR-V, due to go on sale late next year, writes Brian Byrne.

A hybrid prototype to be shown at Frankfurt this week will showcase the new direction, partly dictated by the fall in proportion of diesel engine in Europe.

The car will have a 2.0 petrol engine mated to an electric motor and battery pack which will be recharged on the move.

Its understood the car wont be a plug-in hybrid.

The move follows Toyotas lead in not offering a diesel version of its CH-R small SUV. And diesel versions of the RAV 4 are now down to 25pc in the UK, in favour of hybrid powertrains.

Recall Alert Honda Philippines Recalls Select City CR V and Jazz

If the two recalls last year which involved nearly every car in Hondas line-up built from 2003 to 2011 due to a suspected defect in the drivers airbag inflator, this time the recall had now included 2012 to 2013 Jazz hatchbacks, 2012 to 2014 City sedans, and 2011 CR-V sport utility vehicles. This voluntary preventive measure campaign aims to remedy this problem before things may arise.

Although no related incidents were reported in the Philippines, this campaign ensures the safety of the owners and to avoid any untoward incidents in the future. Replacement and repair of the affected part will take only one hour free of charge to the customer. Affected owners are advised to contact
their nearest Honda dealer to schedule an appointment.

Used Car Review Nissan Frontier Navara 2007 2015

A throwback is an order for Myk Belmonte, in which he reviews a truck that became popular back then.

2007-2015 Nissan Frontier Navara

History
Nissan started with the pick-up craze way back in 1934 under the Datsun name for Japanese consumption until it was exported worldwide after. The Nissan name first appeared in the 720 series until fully used (and ditching the Datsun brand in 1986 but revived 26 years later) in the D21 model. Replacing the rather aging Hardbody truck (D21 chassis), the Frontier was first launched in 1997 and still produced in some countries until now alongside the current model.

The second generation model, known internally as the D40 series, started production in October 2004 in which it graduated to the mid-size class in terms of exterior dimensions. This generation also paved way for a 5-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual, which was absent in its previous iterations. Suzuki so ld the similar Equator pick-up from 2008 until 2010 in Canada or 2012 in USA which is virtually the same car but with a different badge.

In response to the modern competition, Universal Motors Corporation introduced the Frontier Navara (the older Frontier was sold as the Bravado mostly to fleets) in late 2007. The ace was the torque that it offered against direct rivals, in which rivals upped later on while the vehicle got old. It was replaced by the NP300 Navara in February 2011. Although it was initially available in both 4x2 and 4x4 versions, numerous spin-offs were added including a utilitarian Brute, Tech Xtreme, and Krome Edition.

Value and Costs
Currently, the cheapest Navara that you can find in the second hand market can set you P600,000 while later models are in the million bucks range, with their warranty being intact. We suggest that you stick with the normal models or the Brute if you can, unless you want more chrome bits or a navigatio n system and a socket for your pocket wi-fi.

Most Navaras have a weak point in the EGR (located in the exhaust area that is connected to the engine) caused by mechanical failure and the turbo (a common problem among CRDi powered vehicles) especially when the owner does not have the habit of cooling down the engine or had used low quality fuel. Do check these out for a worry free driving.

Exterior and Interior
Measuring a little longer than its predecessor, the Navara looked longer than most competing trucks but looked lower than some rivals (not including lower models of competitors). If you look closer, the exterior resembles the North American exclusive Titan with its flank giving it a larger appearance. As a pick-up, rubber lining comes standard in the bumper, same goes with the bedliner in the bed. Do take note that the width and height of 4x2 models differ than those of its 4x4 counterparts.

Going inside, the interior is similar to a car than a rudimentary truck especially that its seating position is more comfortable to be in. Tan is the color of the dashboard which makes you forget you are driving a truck, but grey would be much better though as to avoid any dirt. Good thing it gains more cubbyholes and storage bins for your stuff, a steering wheel similar to the 350z, and controls for the radio and aircon that are easy to use. For 4x4 models, the system can be engaged through a knob situated below the climate control.

Engine
Although the displacement and the engine codes are the same, power output and torque are different for both drivetrain. 4x2 models get the YD25DDTi in mid form with 142hp at 4,000rpm and 356Nm at 2,000rpm while 4x4 variants have the high version that produces 172hp at 4,000rpm and 403Nm at 2,000rpm. Power can be reached as low as 2,000rpm, thanks to a wider powerband that can benefit you in terms of fuel economy.

Driving Impressions
Driv ing this one will treat you to little body roll and riding comfort is similar to the Patrol SUV. A eight-cross member ladder frame gives the truck added stability and handling when it comes to mountain roads but steering feel is light (albeit numbing). All 4x4 models get a limited slip differential that is beneficial in off-roading situations.

Verdict
The pick-up truck race is a fierce one, especially that rivals outdo one another in terms of power, torque, and amenities. While rivals may have outpaced this one, the Navara can still hold its pace wrapped in a modern package while remaining true to its roots.

The Good:
  • Gobs of power and torque
  • Civilized than its predecessor
  • Car-like
The Bad:
  • Somewhat low ground clearance
  • Power may be lacking for some
  • Interior may get dirty
The Pick: 4x2 LE
